BYZANTINE MUSIC

The term “Byzantine Music” refers to music created during the period of the Byzantine Empire (330-1453 AD) but also includes later musical works that follow the music system established in the Byzantine era.

Today, Byzantine music is widely used in the functions of the Orthodox Church. A large part of contemporary ecclesiastic music was created after the Byzantine period but, due to the fact that it is based on the tradition, system and style of the Byzantine
period, it is also included in Byzantine music.
