Western Art Music

Introduction

The tradition of art music in Greece was considered to start invariably from 1830 (the year of Greek independence), reproducing the views of Manolis Kalomiris, However, the year 1771 should be regarded as marking the beginning of Greek art music in the Ionian Islands under Venetian rule (1386–1797), while at this time period we can also find a Greek representative of renaissance music, Francisco Leontaritis (~1518 - ~1572).
